League of Women Voters highlights homelessness issue – Speakers share perspectives at Camarillo forum

As actor Jace Meadows from Ventura Improv Company, portraying a homeless man, interrupted speaker Rick Pearson to ask if there was any food, a number of kindhearted people ran to fill plates with the cupcakes and fruit available for forum participants.

The idea was to get people involved, according to Ventura City Councilman Neal Andrews, an outspoken advocate for the homeless. “You saw how people immediately responded. We wanted to punctuate the message,” Andrews said.

Because the forum also included people who have been homeless telling their stories, Katherine Kasmir of the Ventura Improv Company did a skit in which she portrayed a woman living in her car with her four children. Afterward, she took pains to clarify the theater troupe’s intentions.   Read more: –

Speakers will include Peter Brown, Ventura Community Services Manager, Cathy Brudnicki, Executive Director of the County Coalition on Homelessness, and Neal Andrews, Ventura City Councilman and Chair of its Social Services Task Force.
