augusto boal

The improv world lost another beloved figure, when Augusto Boal passed away in May 2009. Creator of many groundbreaking interactive and innovating theatre techniques, Boal encouraged the use of improvisation among “real” people to explore political and interpersonal issues. His technique and book Theatre of the Oppressed continues to be highly regarded and utilized through the world.

Says Tom Mueller, Artistic Director of Ventura Improv Company: “He was a great creator and innovator who has, happily, left behind a few actual and many spiritual offspring who will carry on his work.”
