Ventura Improv Company marks its 20th anniversary at special show

Comedy institution welcomes back the woman that started it all

Ventura, CA (July 8, 2009) — Barbara Scott, the woman who brought comedy improv to Ventura, will be performing with the Ventura Improv Company (VIC) on Saturday, July 11.

In 1989, Barbara Scott, an actor and improviser based in the San Francisco Bay Area, came to visit her mother in Santa Paula and, while there, put on an improv workshop. Little did anyone know the impact that that visit would make — several workshop attendees went on to form what is now the Ventura Improv Company, now in its 20th year. Barbara will be visiting again this weekend to give a workshop and to be featured in the VIC’s “Barbara Scott Appreciation Night” on July 11 at 8pm.

Barbara has been a member of the BATS (Bay Area TheatreSports™) Company and coaching staff since that comedy institution’s inception. She is a founding member of True Fiction Magazine improvisational theatre, with whom she’s performed internationally. She is also a working actor in film, industrials, trade shows and voiceover.

She has also visited VIC several times over the years, returning to teach and to participate in the VIC’s annual Labor Day improv festival. Her unique style, quick wit, and musical heart lend a wonderful, rich feeling to everything she does on stage.

“We’re lucky to have her back,” says Judy Gottlieb, VIC’s Vice President. “Barbara  is one of the great improvisers, musical and otherwise.  I’ll never forget her winning one of our improv tournaments by making up a love song — to a cork! It was beautiful, poignant and incredibly funny. She brings an amazing amount of grace and intelligence to the stage.”

Barbara Scott Appreciation Night, where Barbara will appear with members of the Ventura Improv Company, takes place at the VIC, July 11, 8pm, at 34 North Palm Street. Tickets are $10 and reservations can be made at (805) 643-5701 or by email: ticketsventuraimprov.com.
