Ventura Improv Comedy features youth actors at special Friday show and at Labor Day weekend festival
Teen and youth improvisers take over the stage at two special comedy improv events

Ventura, CA (August 20, 2008) — Ventura Improv Company (VIC) welcomes to the stage special workshop youth actors this Friday, and features a high-school improv team during their upcoming comedy improv festival on Labor Day weekend.

Teen improvisers from ages 13-18 have been hard at work Wednesday nights during the summer, developing the skills to perform comedy improv. Some of the skills taught are to listen, create great characters, tell fantastic stories, think on one’s feet — and make it all up as one goes along, all while learning to develop teamwork and work as an ensemble.

The workshop’s teachers are veteran improvisers with many years of experience as teachers, students and performers.

Their hard work will culminate in a special show on Friday night (August 22), where some of the students will perform onstage with some of the VIC’s regular actors. Workshop participants will also support the show, by directing the lighting, scoring, and handling the box office duties.

VIC also welcomes their old friends The Chadwick Improvisers to their three-day Laughstock comedy improv festival over Labor Day weekend. The Chadwick Improvisers, or ChImps, have been regular visitors to Ventura over the festival’s 9-year run. ChImps is an improv group composed of members of The Chadwick School, a high school located in Palos Verdes, CA. “ChImps always brings a youthful energy to our festival,” VIC director Tom Mueller says. “Often times, these teens outshine even the most seasoned perfomer.”

Members of ChImps will be included in shows throughout the Labor Day weekend. This year’s festival schedules a marathon of shows all weekend long starting Friday from 7-11pm, moving on to Saturday from 6-11pm, and finishing with the Sunday “Master of the Universe” grand finale and more from 6-11pm.

About Ventura Improv Company

In 1989, an improviser from the Bay Area TheatreSports™ group came to visit her mother in Santa Paula and while there she put on an improv workshop. At that time, there were a handful of performers doing improv in Ventura, and several of them, including current leaders of the group, Gary Best and Tom Mueller, attended that workshop. The two considered that workshop “a revelation,” and went on to form a local TheatreSports™ league.

In the two decades since then, the group has grown in both size and scope and recently created an exciting new vision and strategic plan that they hope will accelerate the growth of their current audience and the scope of their future offerings.
